Five people had been rescued and seven remained missing after the vessel Wine Trader reported a fire off Romania's Black Sea coast on October 15, according to an updated Romanian Naval Authority account. The figures described an active search, not a confirmed death toll.

The vessel, sailing under the San Marino flag, had 12 people aboard. Its first alert described a fire in the superstructure at about 07:00 local time, roughly 13 nautical miles southeast of Sulina. The authority initially listed four people safe and eight missing. A later update reported by AGERPRES raised the rescued total to five and reduced the missing total to seven. It also said the vessel was carrying no cargo.

The change accounts for one additional person rescued. It does not indicate that the original crew total changed. These were the latest figures established in the research available at approximately 16:30 UTC on October 15.

A fire report and a cause investigation

Romanian President Nicusor Dan said Wine Trader and a second vessel, Yara J, had been struck by drones. He did not identify the drones as Russian in the comments reported by Reuters. Defense Minister Radu Miruta said an investigation was under way.

The distinction matters. The maritime authority's initial notice establishes what was reported to rescuers: a vessel fire and people requiring assistance. The president's statement supplies an attributed account of drone impacts. A forensic finding on the cause, the aircraft involved and their operator would answer further questions that the rescue notice cannot.

The incidents raise concerns about shipping near the Russia-Ukraine war, but proximity alone cannot identify who caused a particular fire. A reliable attribution would need evidence such as recovered components, authenticated tracking information or an investigation that explains its findings.

Keep the two vessels separate

Reuters reported rough seas hampering the Wine Trader rescue. It placed that vessel outside Romanian territorial waters and Yara J inside them. Other descriptions of the maritime boundary differed, so the rescue position should not be treated as a settled legal determination from a headline alone.

Yara J was a separate incident, with its crew reported safe. Its location and outcome must not be transferred to Wine Trader. Nor does a report that two vessels were affected establish that they encountered the same aircraft or that a single investigation has determined both causes.

The next consequential update is the fate of the missing crew. As with other reports of ships struck at sea, rescue information, physical damage and attribution develop on different timelines. The rules for counting deaths and missing people are especially important while searches continue: seven missing remains seven missing unless competent authorities establish a different status.
